Everything’s bigger & cheesier in this Texan menu

Breakfast tacos, cheesy queso, ice-cold spicy palomas… it’s what Texan dreams are made of. Beloved LA-based restaurant HomeState and their down home eats are bigger and more colorful than ever in this illustrated menu collaboration with Hannah K. Lee.

The Artist

How did you first fall in love with HomeState and their food?

The first time I had HomeState tacos, I noticed right away they were delicious in a way that was totally different from your typical Los Angeles-style taco. Plus, their queso was bomb! I’m also originally from Houston, Texas (though I’m an LA Korean through and through).

What’s your favorite thing on the menu?

I love The Blanco taco and the Don’t Mess with Texas taco. And I always get a side of queso and chips.

How did you capture HomeState’s vibe?

I had a nice chat with Andy, one of the triplet sisters who founded Homestate, which inspired me to incorporate a sense of warmth, hospitality, and family into my design.

What’s the story behind the big, yellow HomeState logo?

One of my favorite kinds of typography is “letters made of stuff.” In this case, that “stuff” is Homestate’s amazing queso. I redrew the logo in cheese and made it the centerpiece.

What inspired the details in your menu?

HomeState is all about their fresh ingredients! It’s highlighted in the original menu design and I wanted to preserve that detail, but with my own spin.

What made you go for a hand-drawn style in your illustration?

Drawings that are a little wonky feel more human and down to earth. That hand-drawn, downhome quality captures HomeState’s Texan appeal. I wanted to capture that feeling of bringing people together, eating well, and playing music back in Texas.

What sets HomeState’s menu apart from the rest?

The Texan quality of HomeState’s tacos sets them apart from LA street-style tacos. Good flour tortillas are a big deal here in LA where deviating from corn is seen as blasphemous. I also love their special collaboration tacos with local musicians.

Any easter eggs in your menu?

Nope, just regular eggs!

The Restaurant

How would you describe the HomeState experience?

Eating at HomeState is meant to feel like you’re in a friend’s backyard: easy and casual. We’ve got good music, good drinks, good food, and friendly people. That’s easy Tex living.

What about Hannah’s design captures Homestate’s personality?

She captures our playful personality with those big queso vibes! Her menu also gives a shout-out to the quality ingredients we’re proud of, like Beeler’s bacon and Vital Farms eggs.

What’s one item on your menu that everyone is sleeping on?

Andy’s Migas (scrambled eggs with crispy corn strips, onion, monterey jack, and chorizo), along with our flour tortillas. You can make your own tacos with this combo!

What item on the menu could you eat every day?

The Frio breakfast taco (refried charro beans, monterey jack) with green salsa.

What’s one thing you make that’s secretly off-menu?

Here’s a little insider info: some of our special collaboration Band Tacos are available off the menu!
